Creating a Google Business Profile
- Creating a Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is a free process that allows your business to appear in Google Search and Maps.
- Here is the step-by-step guide to creating and verifying your profile.
Step 1. Start the Creation Process
- Go to google.com/business and click “Manage now.“
- Sign in with your Google account (it is highly recommended to use a business email address rather than a personal one).
- Type in your business name. If it doesn’t appear in the dropdown, click “Add your business to Google”.
Step 2. Enter Business Details
- Business Name & Category: Use your exact, legal business name. Select the category that best matches your main business activity.
- Location: Add your physical address if you have a storefront. If you are a service-area business (e.g., a plumber or cleaner) that visits customers, select “No” and define your service area instead.
- Contact Info: Add your phone number and website URL.
Step 3: Verify Your Business
To manage your profile, you must verify your ownership. Google will offer options based on your business type, which may include:
- Video Recording: A recording showing your location, equipment, and proof of management.
- Phone or Text: A code sent to your business number.
- Email: A code sent to your business email.
- Postcard: A physical postcard sent to your address (usually takes up to 14 days).
Step 4. Optimize Your Profile
Once verified, fill out the rest of the profile to stand out:
- Business Hours: Keep them accurate, including special holiday hours.
- Description: Write a compelling, 750-character “elevator pitch” for your business.
- Photos/Videos: Add high-quality photos of your logo, exterior, and interior to build trust.
- Services: List the specific services you offer.
Important Tips
- Keep it Updated: Regularly add posts, update hours, and reply to reviews to maintain a high ranking.
- No Spamming: Do not include keywords in your business name that are not part of your legal name, as this can lead to suspension.
- Managing Multiple Locations: If you have multiple locations, you can create a business group in the dashboard.
